A Challenge and an Observation
For years I’ve toyed with starting a (third) blog, one that’s just for me. My work blog and snarky cloud blog have their places, but there’s some content that just doesn’t fit there. To that end, I’ve set a challenge for myself to write one personal blog post a day for the entire month of June, so let’s get after it.
It’s June 1. Most folks consider this to be the start of Pride Month; however, in our house it’s first and foremost our elders daughter’s birthday since she doesn’t like sharing a spotlight. So for us, Pride starts on June 2nd. That said, I can’t help but look at various corporate websites and seeing how… muted, Pride is this year.
In previous years, the big tech titans had websites that look like a box of Lucky Charms threw up all over them. This year… basically nothing. It reinforces my natural tendency towards cynicism; when companies toss their purported values aside when it becomes politically expedient, how deeply held were those values in the first place? Further, why is it so disappointing when this happens? I think we want to rely on large companies becoming the standard-bearers when our institutions fail us, but that won’t work. Their one and only religion is money. People wonder why I’m as cynical as I am? I think it’s a natural outgrowth of living long enough to have your heart broken in a number of different ways.
I’m working on it.
